Did you know that another name for a circular knife is rotary blade?
When it comes to blades and knives there’s a lot of terminology. Knowing the terms is helpful when procuring tools for your plant, factory, or workshop. The more you know, the better purchasing decisions you can make.
Below, Hyde Industrial Blade Solutions defines key blade and knife terminology.
Babbitt Slots – Babbit slots are found on machine knives. They permit Babbitt metal to be used as a “shim” to correctly position the knife in its holder.
Blade Tension – This term is related to circular blades. Blade tension is the pre-stretching of the inner area of the blade to create tension on the rim of the blade.
Blade Tension #2 – The direct pull on a blade. Blade tension is measured in pounds and is typical of bandsaw and hacksaw blades.
Carbide – Carbide is a particularly hard metal compound that comes in a variety of strengths. It’s known for holding a sharp edge over long periods of time.
Face – For single bevel blades, “face” is the widest side, opposite the bevel side.
Peripheral Runout – Peripheral runout is when a circular knife or blade “hops” while spinning in its machine. Peripheral runout is also referred to as concentricity. Basically, it means the blade’s arbor hole (or center hole) isn’t perfectly centered.
Secondary Bevel – Secondary bevel is the second bevel applied to a blade. It’s the steeper bevel and starts closest to the edge of the blade.
Single Bevel with Land – Single bevel with land refers to a single bevel blade that has a small flat extending from the end of the bevel all the way to the back of the tool.
Twist – When a blade is not flat, or straight, it has a “twist.” Sometimes “twist” refers to the bending or spiraling of a blade after its been used.
Vanadium – Vanadium is a material added to steel that improves hardenability.
